"I grew up with the house that everybody came to," says Lowell, describing his family’s home on Lake Rabun in rural northern Georgia. "It’s where we all made out for the first time and drank booze and smoked pot and went skinny-dipping, did all those things you do when you’re discovering yourself and trying to figure out how to be adults. I wanted to tell a story with all that in its veins.
"The irony is that a couple of summers ago my friends and I were all there together and I remember thinking, ‘What would it be like if we lost this (property) one day?’ " With that proposition as his inspiration, Lowell and his writing partner Mo Narang began their screenplay.
"A year later, my mom called and told me the house was sold. She and my dad were leaving the South," Lowell says. "I completely flipped out. I moved back in for the month of escrow, all but handcuffed myself to the floor and kept writing."
